User & Society
User and Society has been an area I did not put much thought into during the first years of my studies. While I had conducted basic user tests in my earlier projects, my appreciation for incorporating user perspectives into the design process truly solidified during Project 3, Fixgrid. As a social design project bridging the gap between informal repair knowledge and formal design education, our constant interaction with repair café volunteers provided invaluable insights into the project for locating the gaps and needs of the community. I've gotten even more comfortable with the user-centered design approach when I did my B3.1 internship in a social design studio, where I got to design conversation tools for numerous interviews.
In the first weeks of my FBP, Tabula, I conducted an ethnographic study to understand how tables function in contemporary society and their evolving role in our daily lives. Through this systematic investigation, I gained valuable insights into how people interact with tables in different contexts, their emotional connections to these everyday objects, and the social dynamics that emerge around them, all of which set a solid groundwork for the subsequent stages of the project.
The critical approach I adopted in my design vision requires a close investigation of society, noticing the gaps and flaws in the ways we interact with objects. so in the future, I will continue to work closely with the users involved. This approach allows me to not only identify existing problems but also develop more meaningful and thoughtful design interventions that address these societal patterns.
