About
The “Aesthetics of Interaction” course emphasizes the often-overlooked aspect of design: interaction. We explored various frameworks and concepts, such as the “Frogger Framework” for user-product interaction and “Augmenting Fun and Beauty: A Pamphlet,” which focuses on designing experiences rather than just products. The course culminated in designing a wake-up experience, leading to the creation of the “sword of Excalibur” concept.
The “sword of Excalibur” is a wake-up experience designed to instill a sense of victory and achievement at the start of the day. The user sets the alarm by inserting the sword into the stone, locking it in place. When the alarm goes off, the sword thumps, lights simulate lava, and ambient sounds guide the user. Pulling the sword out provides augmented feedback through sound and light, creating an engaging and motivating wake-up experience.
My Contribution
My primary responsibility was the sound design, where I created a “soundtrack” for the prototype and controlled the sequence for the user experience. I also collaborated with my team to build a life-sized stone with a heavy, full metal sword. This project challenged me to balance intuitive design with factual foundations, enhancing my skills in Creativity & Aesthetics, Technology & Realization, and User & Society. The experience was transformative, pushing me out of my comfort zone and improving my ability to design for user interaction and experience.
