Tabula is a critical design project on how people form bonds with the objects they own. Consumer products are designed to be frictionless and easy to replace, yet strong relationships demand effort, compromise, and time. Responding to the brief "Living Tables," the project treats the table not as a passive object built to serve, but as an equal participant: a desk surface of kinetic sand that holds every mark until it is deliberately erased.

Through research-through-design and five consecutive workdays of autoethnography, the surface replaced a standard desk. An overhead camera captured 496 images, and a diary recorded each emotional response. A forensic analysis then coded every imprint into four themes: functional anchors, incidental wear, ritual candidates, and negotiated territory. The decisive moment came when a careless notebook trench was leveled and given a place of its own. Repair became a form of dialogue, and the table a partner rather than furniture.
